Brunei Darussalam’s participation in the 33rd Southeast Asian (SEA) Games reached another milestone on Friday as the nation bid farewell to the fourth and final batch of its contingent heading to Bangkok, Thailand.

The regional multi-sport event, co-hosted in Bangkok and Chonburi, is currently underway from December 9 to 20.

The latest group to depart comprised the national swimming team – four athletes accompanied by their coach – who will be representing the country when the swimming events begin on December 14 at the Sports Authority of Thailand’s Swimming Pool in Bangkok.

The send-off at the Brunei International Airport was attended by Acting Director of Youth and Sports Haji Mohamad Rosfazilah bin Haji Yusly to convey his best wishes and words of encouragement.

He was joined by officers and staff from the Department of Youth and Sports, representatives from the Brunei Swimming Federation and the families of the departing athletes.

The ceremony opened with the recitation of Surah Al-Fatihah and Doa Selamat, led by Awang Shahram bin Haji Abd Rahman, seeking blessings and safe travels for the contingent.

This was followed by a short address reminding the swimmers of the honour of representing the nation on a regional stage and encouraging them to give their best throughout the competition. The event concluded with a group photo session capturing the support surrounding the athletes before they embarked on their journey.

The Department of Youth and Sports under the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports noted that this final departure completes Brunei’s athlete mobilisation for the ongoing Games, reinforcing the nation’s continued commitment to regional sporting excellence. – James Kon
