Wushu athletes returned for a first session at the newly renovated Menglait Sports Complex yesterday after spending last year training at the Multi-Purpose Hall of the Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports Complex.

New carpets were installed at the new-look venue adorned with light-coloured walls. The walls were painted light blue specifically designed to accommodate the athletes during weaponry events training.

There are different stages of wushu training ranging from beginners to national athletes.

The beginner session comprises participants as young as four years, where they are being taught basic fundamentals.

They will then move to the intermediate stage where they can start applying their skills and techniques at the inter-district level.

The fourth phase of training involves national athletes who are preparing for regional or international competitions such as the Southeast Asian (SEA) Games and the World Wushu Championship.

Athletes who enter the training’s third phase may also be sent to international competitions for exposure while the leading national athletes will aim for medals.

Permanent Secretary (Administration, Finance and Estate) at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports Pengiran Mohd Amirrizal bin Pengiran Haji Mahmud oversaw the first training session along with Youth and Sports Department senior officials.

Brunei Darussalam Wushu Federation President Lim Boon Hwa and other senior members from the federation were also present.

National coach Li Hui thanked the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports for their support and contributions to the wushu community.

The wushu community impressed on the regional level in recent times as Mohd Ali Salihin bin Roslan bagged gold at the 30th SEA Games in December 2019.

Badminton athletes also returned to training at the Menglait Sports Complex. Several courts have been fitted while walls have been painted dark to provide players a clear view of the shuttlecock used during training.
