Brunei Darussalam polo team fell to a 5.5- 8 defeat to Malaysia in the qualifying stage of the 4-6 high goal event in the 30th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games.
His Royal Highness Prince ‘Abdul Mateen and Her Royal Highness Princess ‘Azemah Ni’matul Bolkiah represented the national team.
His Royal Highness Prince Haji Sufri Bolkiah, President of the Brunei Darussalam National Olympic Council; His Royal Highness Prince Haji Jefri Bolkiah; and Yang Amat Mulia Pengiran Muda Abdul Qawi watched the match at the Inigo Zobel Polo Facility in Calatagan, Batangas yesterday.
His Royal Highness Prince ‘Abdul Mateen scored one goal in the third chukka.
The reigning holders raced to a 3-0 lead before Brunei replied through a double by Yang Amat Mulia Pengiran Muda Bahar in the first chukka.
Brunei, who was in contention for the gold medal match, recovered and took the lead. Yang Amat Mulia Pengiran Muda Bahar pushed Brunei further ahead but Malaysia slotted home a crucial goal with just three seconds of the second chukka remaining.
Malaysia swapped leads with Brunei in the third chukka after they grabbed two goals before His Royal Highness closed the gap with a goal.
However, the Malaysians took control with two further goals in the fourth chukka to seal the tie.
In the other match, the Philippines secured their second straight win in the tournament after a 6-4.5 win against Indonesia.
