NATIONAL athletes should always show high dedication, commitment and discipline in carrying out responsibilities while also staying focussed, determined and high spirited as well as delivering their best performance during competition.

The motivational call was made by His Royal Highness Prince Haji Sufri Bolkiah, President of the Brunei Darussalam National Olympic Council (BDNOC) yesterday during the national flag handing-over ceremony to the Brunei contingent who will be competing in the 18th Asian Games in Jakarta Palembang, Indonesia from August 18-September 2.

His Royal Highness handed over the national flag to the Chef de Mission of the Brunei contingent Umi Kalthum binti Haji Karim at the Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium yesterday.

His Royal Highness believed all athletes should fulfil the trust placed on them positively, because without it, it will become a barrier for every athlete to overcome challenges and obstacles in achieving success.

“National athletes are selected for the Asian Games based on the qualification and detail assessment decided by the national athletes’ assessment and selection committee. Therefore, each athlete should make full use of the opportunity to bring up the good name of Brunei Darussalam in the 18th Asian Games.”

As the best athletes of the country in their respective sports, His Royal Highness commented, “The Brunei contingent will certainly receive strong support from sport enthusiasts in the country. I hope that with the public support, it can inject the spirit of unity when facing a competitor in the tournament.”

Earlier in his sabda, His Royal Highness expressed his gratitude to the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports for the support given to BDNOC to send eight male athletes and seven female athletes to compete in seven sporting events.

Asked on anti-doping, His Royal Highness stressed “As a national athlete and also selected officer to represent the country, you should already understand the importance of taking care of oneself from prohibited items that are illegal in terms of anti-doping.”
