Heroes’ welcome for SEA Games athletes

THE Brunei Darussalam 29th Southeast Asian (SEA) 2017 Games contingent returned to a heroes’ welcome yesterday afternoon at the Arrival Hall of the Brunei International Airport.

Eleven officials, 15 officers and athletes from Sepak Takraw, three officers and athletes from Pencak Silat and 10 officers and athletes from cycling returned after participating in the SEA Games in Kuala Lumpur.

The Pencak Silat athletes returned with one silver medal from Seni/Artistry Tunggal Puteri through Norleyermah binti Haji Raya.

The Sepak Takraw team brought back four bronze medals through Men’s Chinlone Event 3 (Linking), Men’s Chinlone Event 1 (Non-Repetition Primary), Men’s Team Regu and Men’s Regu.

Pehin Datu Lailaraja Major General (Rtd) Dato Paduka Seri Haji Awang Halbi bin Haji Mohd Yussof, Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports was present at the Arrival Hall to greet the contingent and presented sashes to the medallists.

Also present were Haji Noor Jusmin bin Haji Abdul Samad, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports and other officers and staff of the ministry.

In an interview with the Bulletin, silver medalist Norleyermah said she was very thankful and will continue to do her best next time.

“I tried my best and wished I could get gold for our country. Silver was the best I could get for now. I will train harder and try my best to get gold next time.

This was Norleyermah’s sixth participation in the SEA Games. She won silver in Thailand’s 2007 SEA Games and Indonesia’s 2011 SEA Games.

Brunei Darussalam Contingent grabbed 14 medals from the 29th SEA Games in Kuala Lumpur. Five silver medals came from Wushu, Lawn Bowls and Pencak Silat, while nine bronze medals came from Polo, Netball, Karate-do, Pencak Silat, Lawn Bowls and Sepak Takraw.
