Brunei celebrate 21st World Athletics Day

THE Brunei Darussalam Athletics Federation (BDAF) joined the world in celebrating the 21st IAAF (International Association of Athletics Federations) World Athletics Day at the Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium in Berakas on Sunday.

The annual worldwide athletics festival offers the opportunity to promote the sport through youth participation in clubs and schools, according to the IAAF. Tutong ‘A’ was crowned overall champions in the boys 16 to 17 category, followed by the Sports School and Brunei-Muara ‘A’.

Brunei-Muara ‘A’ claimed first in the boys 13 to 15- years old category, with the Sports School second and Belait ‘A’ third. Sports School won the girls 16 to 17 years old category. Brunei-Muara were second and Tutong ‘A’ third. Sport School also won the girls 13 to 15 years old category, followed by Brunei-Muara ‘A’ and Belait ‘A’. Newly appointed BDAF general secretary Md Shahjohan Hj Shari said more than 150 young athletes took part in the annual global celebration.

“As the newly appointed general secretary, I am quite happy with the overall turnout at the event and I hope we will see more next year,” said Md Shahjohan.

“Aside from the athletics events, we had exhibition booths from the Brunei Darussalam Anti-Doping Committee (BDADC), Brunei Darussalam National Olympic Council (BDNOC) and photo booths for the public to pose with the national athletes - one of our biggest attractions to date,” he added.
