History was made as the inaugural Brunei National Lawn Bowls Premier League 2014 kicked off yesterday.

Thirty lawn bowlers separated into 10 teams competed in the triples event during the opener held at the Lawn Bowls Arena of the Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports Complex in Berakas. The Stingrays were the biggest winners after erasing a 5-0 deficit at the start to triumph 28-13 against the Sabres.

The Panthers also won after defeating the Scorpions 17-10 while the Lions beat the Tigers 16-10. The Thunder edged the Eagles 14-13 for the triumph while the Jets and Warriors shared the spoils as their game ended 17-17 after 18 ends.

Organised by the Brunei Darussalam National Lawn Bowls Association with the cooperation of the Department of Youth and Sports, each round consists of one game of singles, one game of pairs and one game of triples. The singles games will be 25 shots up with four bowls. The pairs game is three bowls and 18 ends while the triples are contested with two bowls and 18 ends.

Three points are on offer for each round. One point will be awarded for each rink win while a draw is half point each. The top four teams after nine rounds (facing every other team) will advance into the next round of the tournament.

Present as the guest of honour to officiate at the opening was Dato Paduka Malai Hj Ali Malai Hj Othman, the president of the Brunei Darussalam National Lawn Bowls Association. The competition continues today with the singles and pairs events starting at 7.40pm to complete the opening round.
