The National Badminton Championship Brunei Darussalam 2014 continued last night with a number of quarter-finals contested at the Indoor Stadium of the Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports Complex in Berakas.

In the men's doubles veteran category, Yusof Hj Ghani and Robert Liew Poh Chian booked their place in the semis after cruising to a 2-0 win (21-13, 21-16) over Mohammad Yani and Kassim Mohammad.

"I found the court quite windy and we were trying to adjust to the environment but I am glad that we were able to win and go through to the semi-final," said Liew in an interview with The Brunei Times after the match.

"We had a good game and it was a very convincing win for us.

"My partner, Yusof, played well and we have a very good partnership in the game," he added.

The other quarter-final matches in the men's doubles veteran category saw the duo Hj Anuar Abdullah and Hj Shahbuddin Ahmad defeat Pg Hj Zainuddin Pg Ali and Hj Mohammad Khairul 2-0 (21-12, 21-19).

Pg Hj Ismail and Mohammad made easy work of Pg Zaman and Mohammad Hasdi 2-0 (21-18, 21-15), while Hj Mohd Daud and Ng Hui Hua booked their berth following a hard fought 2-1 (20-22, 21-16, 17-21) win over Hj Isa Hj Kahar and Sani Hj Rajak.

Last night also saw action in the boys' singles (18 years and below), boy's doubles and men's doubles.

The championship continues with the boys' doubles, boys' singles and men's doubles semi-finals today at 1.30pm.

The other categories competed in the tournament are women's singles, women's doubles and girls singles.

The competition attracted a total of 356 shuttlers from across the nation.

The large turnout will aid the cause of tournament organisers Brunei National Badminton Association to identify and select local players with most potential to represent the Sultanate for the upcoming Brunei International Challenge scheduled for Nov 18-23.

The competition was open to all citizens of Brunei who hold either a yellow or purple identity card.
