Junior Table Tennis C'ships set for Feb 28

The Brunei Junior Table Tennis Championships 2014 is scheduled to take place at the end of the month.

Organised by the Brunei Amateur Table Tennis Association (BATTA) in cooperation with the Department of Youth and Sports, the tournament will be held from February 28 to March 2 at the Multipurpose Hall of the Menglait Sports Complex.

The three-day event will be contested in accordance with International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) rules.

There will be three age categories contested at the meet; Under-18 (born on or before 1996), Under-15 (born on or before 1999) and Under-12 (born on or before 2002).

The Under-18 category will have all events: Boys and Girls Singles, Boys and Girls Doubles and Mixed Doubles.

Under-15 paddlers can compete in Singles and Mixed Doubles while the U12 category will only feature the Singles event.

Players are only allowed to compete in their age group.

Registration fee is set at $3 for the singles event and $5 for the doubles event.

Completed forms and entry fees are to be handed in no later than 8pm on February 21.

The draw will be held at the competition venue right after.

The first stage of the Singles competition will be contested in the round-robin format in a best of three series.

The second stage will be a knockout format in a best of five series.

Last year's edition at the School Hall of Sekolah Rendah Beribi Telanai saw Wafi Suhardi claim two gold medals after winning the Under-21 boys' singles and doubles titles.

Wafi went past Brady Ong 11-9, 11-8, 11-5 in the singles final and partnered Jason Koh for the doubles title, where they beat Asyrani Suhardi and Leonardo Koh 7-11, 11-6, 8-11, 11-5, 11-7 for the crown.

Asyrani Suhardi teamed up with Leonardo Koh to share bronze in the singles event, while in the doubles category, Ong/Kiing Teck Liing and Harold/Lim Chin Ann shared bronze.

Leonardo Koh fought off Wafi 9-11, 5-11, 13-11, 11-4, 11-9 to win the Under-15 boys' singles title as Jason Koh and Ak Abd Rasheed took the bronze medals.

In the Under-12 boys' singles category, Luqman Hii defeated Ak Abd Basheer 11-6, 8-11, 8-11, 11-7, 12-10 to emerge as champion.

Ak Muhd Faris and Dublin Ting settled for the bronze medals.

In the girls division, Lydia Hii grabbed the Under-21 singles category after a 12-10, 11-8, 11-8 win over Fiona Hii.

Lyana Hii and Hong Rou Qin took home the bronze medals.

Fiona Hii and Lydi Hii went past Hong Rou Qin and Hong Hui Qin 11-4, 11-5, 4-11, 11-3 to win the Under-12/Under-15 doubles title.

Onn Hui Yi defeated Leong Yi 11-7, 11-7, 8-11, 11-6 for the gold medal in the Under-12 girls' singles category.

Fiona Hii, Hong Rou Qin and the Koh brothers later went on to represent Brunei at July's 19th Southeast Asian Junior Table Tennis Championships in Manila, where Jason Koh won a game against Cambodia in the Boy's Under-15 team event.
