Wednesday, December 25, 2013

The national petanque team ended their year on a low note following their poor showing at the 27th edition of the Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in Myanmar.

The team of Mohamad Zunaidi Hj Ali, Hamidun Hj Abdul Hamid and Hj Yusof Mohamad finished at the bottom of the seven-country table after losing all of their matches in the triple category event on Friday.

Brunei kicked off their campaign with 8-4 loss to hosts Myanmar in their opener before falling 13-3 to Cambodia in their second match.

The squad lost 13-8 to Thailand in their third game followed by a 10-6 defeat at the hands of Laos.

In their final match they were humiliated by Vietnam 13-0.

Brunei however had quite a successful start in their campaign this year winning number of silverware in the regional tournaments.

They started off the year with a bang after winning the Premier Cup of the Port Dickson Open Petanque Tournament in Malaysia in February.

The Bruneian trio of Hj Yussof, Hj Mat Rasil and Hamidun bowled their way to glory by defeating Sepang Petanque team from Malaysia 13-7 in the final of the competition held at the Petron Petanque Pitch at Port Dickson, Negeri Sembilan.

They continued their great form in April when national captain Mazlan Hj Yayha teamed up with Wirna Hj Mohd Yassin to defeat Bintulu Team 13-4 in the final to be crowned the champions of the Bintulu Open Petanque Championship.

The national team however only managed to finished third in the Triple Open category of 7th Pan Pacific Petanque Championship which the country hosted in June.

Hamidun, Zunaidi and Hj Yussof shared third with Indonesia after reaching the semi-final of the event.

Captain Mazlan and Wirna once again did the country proud after bagging a silver medal in Sarawak a month later in July.

The duo defeated Seratok team 13-4 in the semi-final before fell 13-4 to Bintulu-Thailand Mixed team in the final of the Invitational Open Petanque Championship in Bintangor.

However, September was a month to forget for the national petanque team after they failed to defend their titles at 4th Borneo Inter-club Petanque Championship, and the 3rd Borneo Cup Petanque Championship held in Bintulu, Sarawak.

The Bruneian teams at the 3rd Borneo Cup Petanque Championship only managed to grab five silver medals and one bronze finishing second behind champions Sarawak who collected all gold medals in all categories offered and they also failed to finish on top of the podium at the 4th Borneo Inter-club Petanque Championship.

Misery continued for the Bruneians at the Asian Petanque Championship in Bali, Indonesia in October as both their women and men's team failed to get past the first round in their respective event.

Awg Badarudin Hj Murni, Masli Hj Mohammad Said, Hj Mohammad Sahmedeyn Hj Kahar and Hj Mohd Azlan Hj Awg Jali lost all their three group matches in the men's triple category last Monday.

Meanwhile in the women's triple category, a team consist of Hjh Syahrinawati Yahya, Muslinah Amran, Nurhafizah Abdul Razak and Norhani Hj Juna managed to notch one win but lost the other two matches in the group.

However they would bounce back in December retaining their crown at the 4th Sabah Double Open Petanque Championship at Kota Kinabalu in Sabah.

The duo of the Muhd Abdillah and Hj Mohammad Sahmedeyn defeated the Malaysian Navy Team 13-10 in the final to be crowned the champions of the double event.

Mohd Nur Eddy Azmi also did the county proud after finishing first in the single event.

Mazlan and Muhd Abdillah won gold in the previous edition of the tournament in 2012 and they also have won it during the first edition of the tournament back in 2010.
