Brunei's Lawn Bowls enters final team selection phase

The Brunei Darussalam National Lawn Bowls Association (BDNLBA) are in their final phase of selection today for the April 8 to 16 World Indoor Singles Championship in Warilla, Australia.

Twelve men from lawn bowl associations across Brunei will be aiming for the one spot available in their respective category, while eight women will also be competing for the top spot during the second and last elimination round.

The bowlers will be competing at the Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium"s Lawn Bowls Centre starting 5pm.

BDNLBA have scheduled to put the top male and female bowler through training sessions leading up to their fourth participation of the tournament in April.

The first round saw 18 men and 10 women try roll their way through to the next stage last Monday (December 9).

BDNLBA will also be looking at trying to bring in more players in preparation for the upcoming 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.

The championship saw outstanding play from both the women"s and men"s category during this year"s event in Warilla.

New Zealand"s world number one, Jo Edwards picked up her fourth win in five years after eliminating eight time title holder Alison Merrien from Guernsey 3-8, 8-3, 3-2.

Edwards picked her previous win"s in 2009, 2010 and 2012.

Merrien knocked Edwards off her tracks for the hat-trick win in 2011 after taking her out 7-6, 9-5.

Australia"s Jeremy Henry successfully defended his title 10-5, 5-8, 5-0 against New Zealander Tony Grantham to hold the trophy for the second time.
