Thursday, August 22, 2013

Football fans in the Sultanate will get the chance to see national players in action when the national Under-23 and Under-19 teams compete at next week's Six Corners Football Championship.

The national teams will join Indera Sports Club, the Royal Brunei Armed Forces Sports Council (MS ABDB), Royal Brunei Police Forces Sports Council (MS PDB) and Liang Lumut Recreational Club Football Team (LLRC FT) at the August 26 to September 1 tournament.

The six teams will be divided into two groups of three.

Joining the Under-23 team in Group A are Indera and MS ABDB, while Group B will consist of the Under-19 team, MS PDB and LLRC FT.

The Under-23 side are currently preparing for the upcoming 27th edition of the Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in Myanmar in December and were edged 1-0 by the Indonesian national Under-23 team in a friendly at Yogyakarta last week.

The Under-19 team, meanwhile, will be competing in the Asean Football Federation Under-19 Youth Championships in Indonesia next month and the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Under-19 tournament in Thailand in October.

"This tournament will be the first of its kind this year and the main purpose of it is to provide the national Under-23 and Under-19 teams a number of competitive friendly matches as they prepare for their respective tournaments," said National Football Association of Brunei Darussalam (NFABD) general secretary Hj Mohd Noor Hj Abdullah on Tuesday.

"The other four teams invited to compete in the tournament are some of the best local clubs that competed in the DST National Football Super League this year, and I hope that the football fans in the country would be able to come to watch the games to support our local football players in action," he added.

The national Under-23 team's manager also felt the tournament would benefit his players.

"The tournament offers us more good matches as we will be up against a number of the best local clubs in Brunei such as Indera SC and MS ABDB," said the national Under-23 manager Hj Feisal Hj Eusoff in an interview with The Brunei Times recently.

"It will be very interesting."

The tournament will kick-off on Monday with MS ABDB going up against Indera SC at the Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium in Berakas at 8.15pm.
