I'maadi Abd Aziz and Rifa'ie Hj Johor will be flying the flag for Brunei at the Kuala Lumpur Open Track Cycling Championships next Friday.

The duo who will depart the Sultanate for the Malaysian capital on Wednesday are slated to compete in the Elite Men category, and will be taking part in the 15km scratch race on the opening day and the 30km point race the following day.

The days and times given for the races are still tentative and will be confirmed at the managers meeting the day before the competition.

Their races will be contested at the Cheras Velodrome in Kuala Lumpur.

National cycling coach Yafiz Jamaludin recently brought four of his cyclists to the Southeast Asian Grand Prix earlier this month.

I'maadi and Rifa'ie teamed up with Azmi@Loqman Hadzid and Nazri Mastani to finish third in the first leg of the Team Sprint.

The team went one better in the second leg of the event to finish second.

"The last time we competed in a track race we managed to get some good results, and we are hoping to get another podium finish again so we can show that this event has a future (for us) to improve on," Yafiz told The Brunei Times.

"I was impressed with the results because we have never trained on a velodrome track and we put on some good performance.

"Joining this tournament will be a good opportunity for all of us to improve in the event.

"A big thank you to Richard Neo, Brunei Darussalam Cycling Federation (BDCF) and the Department of Youth and Sports for giving us all the support that we needed along the way," added the national coach.

The national team will be riding under the name Brunei-Lof Bakery.

Currently Brunei only has teams for the road and mountain bike category, so young riders are encouraged to step forward to join track racing.

The national road race championship Series II 2013, organised by BDCF and Department of Youth and Sports will take place on Sunday.
