It was heartbreak for Ahmad Taufiq Murni after he was stopped in his tracks in the semi-finals of the Miri City Mayfest 9-Ball International Championship yesterday.

Brunei's top cueist succmbed 10-6 to eventual champion Cyrus Barroca of the Philippines at the Krokop Snooker Centre in Miri, Sarawak.

Barroca, who was a semi-finalist at the 2013 Borneo Invitational 10-Ball Pool Championship in Kota Kinabalu last month, got off to a blistering start after winning the first four racks in the race to 10.

The Filipino was in cruise control and eventually extended his advantage to 9-3.

Taufiq finally managed to gain a bit of momentum and rallied to win the next three, but it was not enough to see him fall.

In the other semi-final matchup, another Bruneian, Randy Wong, lost 10-2 to Sarawakian Chiang Wong.

Barroca took the crown and cash prize of RM1000 after dispatching Chiang 11-7 in the final.

Pg Anak Hj Abdul Awadi ZH Pg Anak Hj Latifuddin was the next best performer after finishing in the top-eight. He was edged 9-8 by Wong in the quarter-finals on Saturday.

A total of 19 Bruneians competed at the May 23-26 competition, and eight of them made it to the last-16.

The others that progressed out of the group stages were Hj Md Alirani Hj Besar, Mohd Khalid Abu Bakar, Pg Hj Husairi Pg Hj Metusain, Amran Shah Hj Md Isa and Mohd Azim Hj Abu Bakar.

Taufiq, Pg Anak Hj Abdul Awadi, Mohd Qusyairi and Hj Md Alirani were the ones selected by the Brunei Cue Sports Association (BCSA) to fly the flag for the Sultanate. Mohd Qusyairi was ousted in the group stages contested in a double elimitation format on a race to seven, while Hj Md Alirani fell in the last-16 after losing 9-5 to compatriot Taufiq in the last-16.
