Olympic torch to make 2.5km journey around BSB

The route for the Olympic Torch Run to mark 200 days left to the London Olympics 2012 was finalised yesterday at a meeting held at the Conference Room of the Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium in Berakas.

The Olympic Torch Run is scheduled for Feb 11.

Prior to the run, a ceremony to hoist the London Paralympic Olympic Flag 2012 will take place at the ground floor of the Yayasan Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah (YSHHB) Shopping Complex in the capital.

The run will cover a distance of 2.5 kilometres with both the start and finish line at the YSHHB Shopping Complex.

Chairing the meeting was Hj Mohd Zamri Dato Paduka Hj Hamdani, Deputy Director II of the the Youth and Sports Department, Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports (MCYS).

During the meeting, the itinerary of the ceremony to raise the London Paralympic Olympic Flag 2012 was discussed together with the finalisation of the route for the Olympic Torch Run. The results of the meeting were presented by Hj Mohd Zamri.

Hj Mohd Zamri said that the event to hoist the London Paralympic Olympic Flag 2012 and Olympic Torch run will begin at 7:30am.

The flag hoisting will take place first outside YSHHB Shopping Complex followed by the Olympic Torch run which will begin around 7:50am. The estimated time for the run to be completed is 40 minutes.

The run will begin at the YSHHB Shopping Complex, participants will go along Jalan Mc Arthur and then into Jalan Sultan.

On Jalan Sultan, the participants will then turn right onto Jalan Pemancha and go past Brunei Hotel into Jalan Sungai Kianggeh.

Along Jalan Sungai Kianggeh participants will run past Pusat Belia, Chung Hwa Middle School and Radisson Hotel Brunei Darussalam before going onto Jalan Stoney past the Syariah Court Building.

Participants will then continue to go into Jalan Mc Arthur past the Sultan Omar 'Ali Saifuddien (SOAS) Mosque and back to YSHHB building.

During the run, the genuine 1948 London Olympic Torch will be used and relayed around Bandar Seri Begawan.

Throughout the whole route there will be five checkpoints. The first is at Standard Chartered Bank in Jalan Sultan, the second is near the junction of Jalan Elizabeth Dua, the third is opposite Radisson Hotel.

The fourth checkpoint is opposite the Syariah Court and the final checkpoint is opposite the SOAS Mosque.

Among the participants of the Olympic run are school students from Jerudong International School (JIS), St George's School, St Andrew's School and government schools.

There will be one or two groups of school students representing their respective schools at the checkpoints. They will wait at the checkpoint to receive the torch. Once they have the torch they will run to the next check point and pass the torch to the next group.

The distance of one check point to the next is about 500 metres.

Present at the meeting was Anne Dickinson, Senior Registrar at JIS, Aprille Solis, Personal Assistant to the First Secretary at the British High Commission and leader of the London 2012 promotional activities together with Standard Charted Bank's (SCB) Head of Corporate Affairs and Marketing, Jennifer Kang.

Also in attendance were officers from the Royal Brunei Police Force (RBPF) Investigation and Traffic Control Department, Community Development Department (JAPEM) and Brunei Athletic Association (BAA).

The ceremony to raise the London Paralympic Olympic Flag 2012 and Olympic Torch Run is an event organised by the British High Commission with the collaboration of JIS, MYCS and the Brunei Darussalam National Olympic Council.

Members of the public are encouraged to participate in the event.
