Monday, 7th February 2011

The Indonesian Shorinji Kempo Federation (Perkemi) will make its first of four exhibitions at the Indoor Stadium of the Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports Complex in Berakas at 9am today.

Organised by the Brunei Darussalam National Olympic Council with the cooperation of the Department of Youth and Sports under the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports, the objective is to introduce the martial art to members of the public.

Sixteen athletes and nine officials from Perkemi will demonstrate a number of kempo's meditation techniques, 'embu' and 'randori'.

Embu is performed on the court, in the gym or at other ceremonial occasions, in which one kenshi (disciple) takes the part of an attacker and one acts as the defender.

The embu of Shorinji Kempo is famously known for its speed, smoothness and the harmony of power and beauty.

Randori is sparring between two exponents, each equipped with headgear and body protector.

The exhibition will move to the Mumong Sports Complex in Belait tomorrow at 9am, before stopping at the Tutong Sports Complex at 1.30 am.

On Wednesday, Perkemi will end their trip in the Sultanate with a visit to Belalong Hall in Temburong at 8.30am before ending the day at the Universiti Brunei Darussalam's male hostel at 1.30pm.

High-profile Perkemi members expected to make their presence include Kusumo Martoredjo and Indra Kartasasmita, the president and vice-president respectively.

Indra was one of three persons who officially established Perkemi on Feb 2, 1966.The federation now boasts 50,000 kenshi (members).
