Tuesday, 5th October 2010

Brunei's quest for their first medal in the Commonwealth Games started off on the right foot when most of the country's lawn bowlers won their respective early matches at the Jawaharlal Nehru Sports Complex in New Delhi yesterday.

Esmawandy Ibrahim and Siti Ervi Fedarussanti Umar started the country's campaign by claiming two wins in their Group B matches of the pairs women's event.

First the duo conquered Papua New Guinea 2-0 (8-6, 11-9), before overwhelming Niue Island 2-1 (7-10, 12-3, 4-1).

The triple men's team of Yakup Amit, Md Ali Bujang and Hj Rosli Hj Ibrahim bounced back from a loss in the first set to emerge victorious over Group A opponents Niue Island 2-1 (3-10, 17-7, 3-0).

Meanwhile, Hj Naim Brahim and Abd Rahman Hj Omar were handed a 2-0 (14-4, 9-7) defeat at the hands of South Africa in the Group A pairs men's event.

The lawnbowlers will take to the pitch again today with eight matches slated for competition.

Hjh Lilimaryani Ampuan Salleh, Hjh Fatmah Hj Ibrahim and Hjh Ajijah Muntol will make their debut in the 19th Commonwealth Games against Norfolk Island in the triples women's Group A match, before facing Wales later in the day.

The duo of Esmawandy and Siti Ervi are tasked with an all United Kingdom-affair, set to duel against Scotland and England respectively as they resume Group B's pairs women's action.

Yakup, Md Ali and Hj Rosli will try to outdo Group A triple men's opponents Scotland and Canada, while Hj Naim and Abd Rahman will face Australia and Niue Island.
