7 musclemen among world's top 10

Seven Brunei bodybuilders landed in the top 10 of the World Bodybuilding and Physique Sports Federation (WBPF) 1st World Amateur Men's Body Building Championships in Dubai.

The Brunei contingent returned yesterday to a heroes' welcome after performing above expectations in the competition which featured 69 out of 77 member countries.

The seven musclemen from the National Weightlifting, Bodybuilding & Fitness Association (BWBA/PERANGKE) who achieved world rankings in the top 10 of their respective categories include: Mohamad Azli bin Jumat, who placed 5th in the 60kg category and took home US$1,000 and a trophy.

Six other Bruneians in the top 10 are: Sumardi bin Jumat, 6th in the 65kg category; Abdul Aziz bin Hj Tuah, 7th in 70kg; Yusri bin Zailani, 8th in 75kg; Eddy Norisham bin Hj Awg Damit, 10th in 80 kg; Tomas bin Kaling, 9th in 85kg; and Razali bin Hj Mahmud, 7th in the 100 kg category.

"I am very happy, and very proud of this achievement. I did not expect this at all. I would like to say a big thank you to all the sponsors, especially the Youth and Sports Department, Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports for giving us this opportunity," Azli said.

"This is our first time ever taking part in world competition, and I've managed to come away with US$1,000. In preparation for the competition I did two months of intensive training, in the morning and afternoon.

"I want to increase my efforts even more and help develop the sport of bodybuilding," he said.

The next World Body Building Championships will be held next year in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.

Other championships to be held by the Asian Body Building Federation and other member federation countries have been scheduled in 2010.

The BWBA thanked the Youth & Sports Department, Ministry of Culture, Youth & Sports and their sponsors for ensuring the success of its participation in the 1st World Body Building Championships, according to a press release.

Present to welcome the Brunei contingent was Dato Paduka Hj Jemat bin Hj Ampal, the Permanent Secretary of Culture, Youth and Sports Ministry, with Hj Mohamad Bin Panglima Asgar Dato Paduka Hj Abdullah, the Director of Youth and Sports.
