Brunei for Asian Indoor Games

Brunei will be making its debut in the 3rd Asian Indoor Games in Vietnam and will be taking part in three sporting events - cue, pencak silat and wushu.

The Brunei contingent, comprising 13 athletes, two managers, three coaches, two assistant coaches and four officials, will leave for Vietnam today.

A ceremony was held yesterday to hand over the national flag at the VIP Room of the Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium.

His Royal Highness Prince Hj Sufri Bolkiah, the President of the Brunei Darussalam Olympic Council handed over the national flag to the contingent head Dyg Mariam Ulat.

Also present was the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports Pehin Orang Kaya Setia Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Dr Awg Hj Ahmad Hj Jumat

In his welcoming speech, Pehin Dr Awg Hj Ahmad said that Brunei's participation portrayed the commitment of the country towards the development of sports.

It also showcased the support of the sultanate to Vietnam who have signed a memorandum of understanding on the cooperation in sports between the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports Brunei Darussalam and Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism Socialist Republic of Vietnam.

He further believed that the selection of the country's athletes to the games was based on their capabilities under the guidelines set by the National Committee of Evaluation for regional and international games.

Apart from having good discipline, athletes are hoped to use their skills and experiences from training locally and abroad as well as the ones taught by their respective coaches to achieve success.
