Tears for karate guys

BOTH of the Sultanate's karate exponents competing in the 1st Asian Martial Arts Games in Thailand failed to reap medals in their respective events on Thursday.

Competing in the 55kg and below category, Hj Eddie Jofriani Hj Johari's first match against Nguyen from Vietnam ended 1-1 in normal time at the Hua Mark Indoor Stadium, said the Bruneian contingent's chef de mission Mariam Ulat in an email.

Another minute was played to decide the winner in extra-time but neither Hj Eddie nor Nguyen could score any points.

However, the referee declared Nguyen the winner with a score of 3-1 based on the attempts he made in the extra time.

In the repercharge match Hj Eddie met Omar Faruq from Bangladesh, beating him 3-0.

In the next match Hj Eddie met an athlete from the host nation and was leading 3-2 after the first few seconds.

However, the Thai athlete was able to level the scores six seconds later and from then on, kept pressuring Hj Eddie and managed to score three more points to win the match 6-3.

Muhamad Fida'iy Hj Sanif's first match in the 60kg and below category saw him fall 9-2 to South Korea's Lee Ji Hwan. (JT04)
