Bruneians have been encouraged to get behind the national team when it takes part in the upcoming 5th Special Olympics Borneo Cup 5-a-side football tournament on Dec 1-4.

The Chairperson for the event, Lt Kol (B) Pg Hj Ramli Pg Hj Bunut told reporters at the Special Olympics headquarters yesterday in Gadong: "We are hoping to attract supporters for this rare opportunity, to cheer on the Sultanate team in this Special Olympics event.

"We hope to bring about good relations between the different regions in Borneo, for the athletes to interact with each other and build new relations with one another through this event," he added.

The event, pioneered by Brunei in 2006, will be the second time the Sultanate will host.

A total of eight teams will be arriving on the first day of the event. Kalimantan will be sending three teams, as will Brunei, while Sabah and Sarawak will be sending one team each to represent their respective countries.

Brunei's athletes will comprise students from the Special Education Unit, Pusat Ehsan Al-Ameerah Al-Hajjah Maryam and Pusat Bahagia.

Teams will consist of eight athletes, one head coach, an assistant and one head of delegation for the 5-a-side tournament. All matches will be held at the Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium.
